Whatever the time of year, there is always pleasure to be had from painting and drawing still life.

I often start with a fairly detailed charcoal drawing, in which I make a real effort to get to know my subject intimately and draw it accurately. Although I am originally attracted by the nature of the subject matter, I invariably find that at some point I become even more interested by the spaces in between, so that when I start to paint my work often develops into being about a sliver of light finding its way round a series of objects, or the way one colour sings against another. By this stage the original subject is left behind and the colours make no attempt to reflect what is 'really there' since I am now involved in making something new which never had an existence before.
