Morocco (Click on thumbnail image to see painting. My first visit outside Europe left me intoxicated and yearning to spend every moment trying to do justice to the wealth of visual beauty that surrounded me. Despite my love of colour nearly all I could do whilst there was draw in charcoal, and just as I felt ready to burst into colour it was time to come home! We stayed at Dar Sinclair, a 1930's paradise perched high above the city of Tangier, surrounded by palm trees and papyrus, euclyptus and mimosa, canna and aaron lilies, hibiscus and flame trees. Though it was January we lived outside during the daylight hours, mostly in the magical garden, but also visiting the old city and the Portuguese fortified town of Asilah. Everwhere there was so much to record: the brilliant colours and bustle of the markets, the intricate tiles, plaster and ironwork of the interiors, the abstract geometric shapes of the houses, the gorgeous costumes of the local people. Back home in particularly bad weather it is a joy to turn to my piles of drawings, immerse myself in my memories, and try to pay some kind of homage to a country that I shall return to as soon as I can.
