When spring time beckons but it is still too cold to sit for long out of doors drawing or painting, it is a joy to place some simple flowers on a window-ledge and paint an inside/outside picture of Spring. As the days begin to warm and the hazy soft greens start to replace the first hesitant pink flush of the budding woodland, venturing out into the garden has an especial pleasure.
To work indoors with paint is a hazardous business, unless in the studio, so it is now that pastels come into their own as I perch by the windows in friends' homes in this gentle corner of England, and fall ever more deeply in love with the subtle beauty of this most unspoilt of counties.
The delicate colours of Spring lend themselves particularly well to pastel and I find that as I work the colours take on a life of their own. Unfortunately these softer colours and tonal variations are extremely difficult to reproduce with any accuracy on the screen, especially as my digital camera is very basic!
